The Bible speaks to many, many issues in life. Not surprisingly, Bible stories can be chosen to teach on a variety of topics. Consider some options.
In classic Chronological Bible Storying, stories are told in “tracks”, that is, sets of stories selected for specific purposes. First we teach an evangelism track, a group of stories designed to lead people to faith in Christ. The topic of that track is the gospel. After that we teach a discipleship track designed to guide new Christians to follow Jesus faithfully. Or we teach a church planting track, designed to help Christians know what a church is, what its basic functions are, and how God leads his church. After that we teach a Christian character track, followed by an End Times track that teaches the basics about the return of Christ, the final judgment, and the eternal destinations of the righteous and wicked. In each case we select stories that teach about a topic and that provide the basis for their obedience to some aspect of God’s revealed will.
A lot of work has gone into the development of discipleship and leadership training story sets. The most complete collection of stories is Following Jesus. It consists of an introductory module about orality, literacy and Bible storying, followed by six additional modules of stories on a variety of biblical topics. The seven modules tell over 400 biblical stories. The topics are sequenced developmentally, progressing from the subjects for new Christians to subjects for mature Christians. Following Jesus uses groups of stories on topics as diverse as abiding in Christ, prayer, worship, fellowship, witness, money, sex, spiritual warfare, and leadership, among others.
Other topical sets also deal with discipleship and leadership
It is possible to teach on a great many topics in Scripture by using biblical stories. Those topics may be doctrinal ones, such angels and demons or evil and suffering. They may be interpersonal topics, such as forgiveness. Or they may be devotional, such as the need for loyalty to God. The Stories of Sorrow and Grief for Women were originally prepared for women who had lived hard lives filled with pain and sorrow. They can be used for evangelism among non-Christians, but can also be used as a biblical study in a support group for Christian women who suffer from poverty, bereavement, family troubles, and loss.
